i've been looking in the mirror for so long
THAT I'VE COME TO BELIEVE MY SOUL'S ON THE OTHER SIDE
HATTER: marcus andrew daniels, seventeen, queens leader
no one starts out an orphan. it's impossible. to come into existence, you need a mother and a father. marcus had both of them, along with two older brothers, and eventually a younger sister. his parents weren't planning on dying. they had no clue they were going to die actually... it was one of those deaths. they weren't together when they died. they didn't die at the same time, or even the same year. marcus' mother was the first to go. she died during childbirth, taking what would be marcus' second sister with her. he was seven, his older brothers were nine and ten respectively, and his younger sister was only five. his father went two years later.
his father had been working in a factory since he was younger than marcus had been at the time (which was eleven). he thought he knew his way around all of the machines and could work them about as well as anyone. he had never been expecting that he would make one mistake and that would in his life. marcus' older brothers were both working the factory themselves at this point, and witnessed his father's death. marcus' job was to stay home and watch his little sister. he's really thankful his father hadn't let him get a job as well. his brothers tried to make enough money to keep them together, but in the end, it wasn't plausible. they had to leave their apartment, selling it so they could eat, and while living on the street, his older brothers told him they were going to leave to find a place to stay. he was to watch his younger sister and not move from the spot. he moved. they didn't come back anyway. he watched the spot. he hadn't moved far.
he became a newsie two days later. he was wandering around with his little sister in tow when a boy saw them, asked them what was wrong, and told them where he could get a job and a place to stay. his little sister was nine at the time, and easily fell in with the boys she spent most of her time around. marcus ended up excelling at being a newsie... he was just generally charming and slightly deceiving. what he didn't spend on food and lodging, he spent on his sister. when she started selling with the boys, he started putting the money he usually spent on her away in a secret place to save it.
he became leader when he was fifteen. the former leader liked him, most of the newsies who accepted leaders liked him... it just all worked out well. he takes being leader seriously. he likes to look the part. whenever he's doing something besides selling or hanging out with the boys, he will go all out and dress to his heart's extent. he's even managed to afford a suit or two, after six years of saving and the left over money from his parents and older brothers.
he still resents his brothers sometimes. he thinks it was cowardly, leaving an eleven year old and a nine year old to fend for themselves. he doesn't think he'd have any kind words to say to them if he ever ran into them on the street... which hey, he might. he keeps a look out. just in case.
he received the name hatter when he was thirteen. he had just started becoming obsessed with top hats... he found them so dapper looking and he longed for one. he always seemed to have his newsie hat with him, and he knew top hats weren't practical, but it was still the first thing he ever splurged on. when a boy read Alice In Wonderland to the rest of the group, marcus was immediately dubbed the mad hatter. it eventually shortened to hatter, after marcus admitted to someone that he didn't enjoy being called mad. he was pretty sure he'd know if he was mad. he's been hatter ever since.
his little sister is still the most important thing to him. she's fifteen and he's very cautious of any boy's she's around... he's an over protective older brother, he can't help it. hatter is generally a happy guy, but he does know when to focus on business and when to keep things light or serious. he has been considering quitting the newsies business lately. he thinks that, if he tried, he could get a pretty nice job (or a factory job, okay, maybe) and afford an apartment. he could bring his sister with him until she got married and maybe even find someone to start a family with. he's been considering it, but he probably won't until he's eighteen. his borough needs him.
